To reach their objectives, they realized they would need hundreds of these devices, sparking questions about funding and practicality.

Introducing Jenny: The Ocean’s Guardian 🚢

Last summer, The Ocean Cleanup unveiled their latest model, affectionately named “Jenny.” This innovative device acts as an artificial coastline with a plastic-catching mechanism resembling a giant arm. When plastic is ensnared, it navigates its way into a large funnel-shaped net. Two ships then tow the net through the water at a careful pace of about 1.5 knots to prevent it from breaking in the turbulent waters.

Jenny was put to the test in the North Pacific Garbage Patch, an area known for having the highest concentration of plastic waste globally. It’s located between Hawaii and California and covers an estimated 1.6 million square kilometers, which is three times the size of France.

According to a 2018 study in Scientific Reports, this vortex “covers an estimated area of 1.6 million square kilometers, or three times the size of France.” During their sampling, The Ocean Cleanup team estimated that over 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic had accumulated in the Pacific Ocean.

A Triumph Beyond Expectations 🌟

Jenny exceeded expectations. This exceptional device removed 9,000 kilograms of plastic waste from the Pacific Ocean, demonstrating the effectiveness of this cleanup effort. This success underscores the potential impact of employing more such devices in the future.
